The State Grid Corporation of China has announced its plan to build a 1.1 million volt transmission line that will be able to deliver the output of 12 large power plants over 3,200 km (2,000 miles).

The project is the first of its kind in the world, and a big step in the company’s plans to stitch together the grids of neighbouring nations into a super grid.

The State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) began working on a 1.1 million volt transmission line in 2018. This will be the largest transmission line in the world, capable of delivering huge amounts of power over thousands of kilometres from Xinjiang to Anhui.

Already, the SGCC has plans for the construction of more ultra-high-voltage DC (UHVDC) lines both domestically and as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, a project that is aiming to increase Chinese-led infrastructure investment in more than 80 countries.

The Changji-Guquan transmission line is a colossal feat that will be able to transmit 2,000MW of power, or enough to meet the needs of 26.5 M people, across China.
