Transformer fire at a substation in Nigeria

The TCN confirmed that a transmission substation in Abuja caught fire and stated that one of the power transformers in the substation was involved.

Nigeria, Abuja: The Transmission Company of Nigeria confirmed that a transmission substation in Abuja caught fire on Sunday and stated that one of the 45 MVA 132/33 kV power transformers in the substation was involved.

It said the transformer was part of those that feed the 33 kV feeders of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

General Manager of TCN, Ndidi Mbah, said the fire resulted from a direct fault from one of Abuja Disco’s 33 kV feeders which had a history of incessant trippings, as the 33 kV lacked protection.

The transmission company said it was equally investigating the possibility of transformer protection failure on its 45 MVA power transformer.
