US, Pasadena: A transformer explosion in Monterey Park, Pasadena sparked a grass fire and cut power to thousands of customers.

Fire officials believe the explosion occurred just after several metallic balloons floated into nearby electrical wires, said Division Chief Mark Khail with the Monterey Park Fire Department.

The explosion ignited a grass fire, which burned for about one hour, threatening a nearby apartment complex, Khail said.

More than 2,400 customers in the area were without power, said Jim Hanggi, spokesman with Southern California Edison. The outage included the nearby Monterey Park Hospital, which used its backup generators to maintain power, hospital officials said.
