The $40 M project involves building electric transmission line as well as a new substation. Construction will begin early next year and conclude in early 2022. The upgrades are designed to reduce the likelihood of outages during periods of high electricity demand.

AP will also upgrade substations in Carroll, Grayson, and Wythe counties. Further, the company will remove a substation on Deer Haven Road in Galax and one in Wythe County.
