Puerto Rico: The New York Power Authority is working with Puerto Rico’s main utility, PREPA, to rebuild the island’s electricity grid in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

The Authority is helping to build an automated digital power substation in the San Juan area. It will serve as a model for rebuilding 17 substations that were flooded in the massive storm. NYPA engineers are also helping to train engineers and technicians on the new automated technology.

NYPA also is working with PREPA to reconfigure a power plant on the island of Culebra off Puerto Rico’s east coast. The plant supplies Culebra and another island, Vieques. The new configuration will make sure power continues in case there is a disruption from the mainland. Additionally, they are helping with two planned hybrid-microgrid projects on the islands that will use solar panels, battery storage and emergency generators for backup power.

They also are helping modernize the Humacao Industrial District, which was heavily damaged during the storm, with new substations and underground power lines.
