State secretary Jens Deutschendorf, from the Hessen Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy joined TenneT Managing Director Tim Meyerjurgens to visit the upgraded substation in Mecklar in Ludwigsau, which took five years to complete.
“The substation is an important hub in our network, which significantly strengthens Hesse’s security of supply and supports the further integration of renewable energies,” said Meyerjurgens.
Deutschendorf said: “Hesse intends to cover its energy needs in the year 2050 with 100 % renewable energy and thereby remain an attractive business location.
“To do this, we must exhaust all wind power potential on land and off the coast and rapidly expand our transmission grids. The Hessen state government will continue to support the network operators with all their commitment.”
The substation Mecklar is located geographically in the middle of Germany and sits at the centre of the German transmission system.
In the past five years, TenneT has invested around $44 M (€40 M) in Mecklar.
