Brazil: ABB has completed the first 500 kV digital substation in the world for a 475 MW solar park owned by Enel Green Power Brasil Participacoes Ltda (EGPB).

The new substation will allow the local arm of Italian energy giant Enel SpA to supply electricity from its Sao Goncalo photovoltaic (PV) plant located in Piaui state.

Sao Goncalo was put into operation this January. The PV facility is expected to generate around 1,200 GWh annually, enough to offset approximately 600,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

ABB says that digital substations allow faster and more reliable decision making. The use of fibre optic cables rather than traditional copper cables, in turn, enables safer operations at substations and leads to a reduction in installation time and total cost of ownership.
