Spain, The Balearic Islands: Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) said it has commissioned the interconnection link between the islands of Menorca and Mallorca in the Balearic archipelago.

The $94.3 M (€84 M) project came to the finish line in 18 months after the Spanish government first gave its approval and declared it a public utility.

Construction works were allowed to continue during the peak COVID-19 lockdown due to the project’s importance, REE said Thursday.

The interconnector links the island of Menorca with the rest of the Balearic system and with the Spanish mainland. It is formed by a 132 kV tripolar land and subsea cable running from the Ciudadela substation on Menorca to the Cala Mesquida substation on Mallorca.

The link will significantly contribute to the energy transition proposed for Menorca and the islands as a whole, improve management of the Balearic electricity system, maximise the integration of present and future renewables and cut CO2 emissions, REE added.
