Masina visits newly upgraded Glen Marais substation

South Africa, Ekurhuleni: The City of Ekurhuleni’s executive mayor, Mzwandile Masina, commended the team that worked on the upgrades and maintenance of the Glen Marais substation.
Masina visited the substation on 14 September to monitor the progress on the work being carried out.
Phakamile Mbengashe, spokesperson of the executive mayor, said the City spent $920,000 (R15 M) on the upgrades and maintenance following the fire that damaged it in June 2019, leaving residents of Glen Marais and parts of Birchleigh without power for six days.
“Our investigation revealed that the cause of that fire was cable theft. To mitigate and prevent the same thing from happening, we have installed modern technologies that will protect our infrastructure and our residents in case this happens again,” said Masina.
Due to the upgrades and alterations done, the substation can now supply current customers and the future development without any strain.
“The Glen Marais substation now has three transformers, and the normal load needs two transformers. Thus, the substation has contingency in the event of a transformer failure and has sufficient capacity to accommodate new customers in the area,” said Mbengashe, adding the city is on the drive to renew its infrastructure to meet the current demand.
