Finland, Teuva: Finnish transmission system operator Fingrid has started building a new substation.

The substation will be built in southern Finland and facilitate the connection of up to 1 GW of new wind power capacity to the grid.

The new Karppio substation is located in the municipality of Teuva.

The majority of the construction work will be completed by the end of next year and the installation of the electrical equipment is expected to be complete by autumn 2022.

The total cost of the Karppio project is estimated at around $30 M (€24 M).

Several new grid investment projects are planned in Finland over the next decade to help support the country’s goal of climate neutrality by 2035.

The 303 km Forest Line internal transmission power link connecting Petajavesi in central Finland and Muhos in the north is under construction. It is scheduled to be complete in 2022 and will have an installed capacity of around 700 MW.

Nuclear power output has made up 37 pc of Finland’s energy mix this year, while hydro, onshore wind and biomass have made up 24 pc, 12 pc and 10 pc, respectively.
