Uzbekistan, Tashkent: A teaser has been announced for the Second Solar Project to develop solar energy in Uzbekistan.

The tender for the Second Solar Project will be formally launched in early 2021.

The Second Solar Project will see a solar power station built in the Sherabad district of the Surkhandarya region. The station will be in close proximity, and link to, facilities for the First Solar Project – announced in February 2020.

The Second Solar Project structure will follow international best practice and be guided by transparency, timeliness, sensible risk levels, affordability, and overall value for money.

The Second Solar Project is also promoted by the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade and the Public-Private Partnership Development Agency under the Ministry of Finance. It is part of a strategy developed by Uzbekistan’s government, supported by the Asian Development Bank, to generate 1 GW of solar energy.

Mr. Alisher Sultanov, Minister of Energy for Uzbekistan, said: “With thanks to the ADB and other partners, we are happy to announce the start of this exciting project – the first step along the road to new, sustainable and clean energy production for our future generations. Solar power is a priority for Uzbekistan, and we look forward to reaching our target of 1 GW. Our solar energy strategy will create highly skilled, local clean energy jobs in line with the government’s program for energy diversification.“

The First Solar Project site is also in the Sherabad district of Surkhandarya region, and includes construction of:

  • a PV station with minimum capacity of 200 MWac;
  • a new 220 kV substation; and
  • a 52 km transmission line to connect to the Surkhan 220 kV substation.

The First Solar Project is currently under tendering with a Request for Proposals issued on 14 December 2020, and a submission deadline of 15 March 2021.
