Ecuador, Cuenca: A new transformer was commissioned at Cuenca substation in order to increase the power transmission capacity.

The Electricity Corporation of Ecuador (CELEC EP) installed and put into operation the new 150 MVA transformer, in the Cuenca substation on 27 December 2020. The company has thus enabled an increase in energy delivery and reinforced the transmission system in the Ecuadorian south.

This new transformer is a part of the expansion works being carried out at the Cuenca substation. Further stages that will deal with the supply of repowering equipment, construction and commissioning of three bays of 69 kV, transformation and transmission, are planned for 2021.

The manager of the Transelectric Business Unit, Raúl Canelos, made a tour of the Cuenca substation to supervise the energisation of the new transformer, which is now in operation. He indicated that the installation of the equipment guarantees a better availability and reliability in the electric power service for the south-eastern region.

In addition, with employment of the new power transformer in the Cuenca substation, the Delsitanisagua hydroelectric generation plant will also be able to deliver more energy to the National Interconnected System, having a positive impact on a national scale.

The total investment for the expansion of the Cuenca substation is $3.4 M. The works will enable strengthening the electric power transmission service in the country. In addition, it will contribute to industrial development in the impacted area and the reliability of power supply in the entire south-eastern area.
