Uzbekistan, Tashkent: The Ministry of Energy has signed an investment agreement for the construction of a new thermal power plant in the Surkhandarya Region.

Dutch company Stone City Energy will build new 1,560 MW thermal power plant in Surkhandarya Region. The total value of the 1,560 MW plant construction project is $1.2 B, with the project expected to launch at the end of 2024. Stone City will design, finance, build, commission, operate and manage this new power plant for 25 years.

The thermal power plant will employ the latest technologies, including modern HL class steam and gas units manufactured by Siemens Energy, which will save 1.1 B m³ of natural gas annually.

Construction of the power plant will create 2,000 jobs with 150 specialist jobs to be created post-commissioning.

Following a survey which began in December 2020, a site for the plant has been allocated on 150 ha of land, in the Angora district of the Surkhandarya region.

“The agreements signed with Stone City Energy are yet another example of Uzbekistan working with international partners for the benefit of the country. Due to the country’s economic growth, and the growing needs of the population, we need to fulfil future energy demand. We look forward to working closely with Stone City in the years to come,” said the Energy Minister of Uzbekistan, Alisher Sultanov.
