UK, Prenton: SP Energy Networks has successfully completed a $26.7 M (£17 M) upgrade to the Strathaven 275 kV substation in South Lanarkshire.

The completion of the works by the electricity network operator follows a three-year modernisation project that will benefit not only customers in the local area, but right across central and southern Scotland.

The works involved the installation of new equipment, including the construction of 10 switchgear bays that will support the long-term reliability of the network. The upgrade was carried out in live substation conditions by a range of specialist contractors, each phase managed carefully to maximise the residual reliability of the network for customers during the project works.

“We are committed to futureproofing the network for our customers to provide a reliable, efficient and safe electricity supply and this project is part of an extensive investment plan to achieve exactly that. As demand for electricity increases and we transition to a greener society and decarbonise how we travel and how we heat our homes, it is important that our network can support these necessary changes. Investment like the Strathaven substation upgrade is vital so we can continue to make that happen,” said Pearse Murray, SP Transmission Director at SP Energy Networks.

This upgrade project is part of a wider investment plan which has seen over $2.79 B (£2 B) invested over the past eight years to modernise and grow the transmission network across Central and Southern Scotland.

SP Energy Networks is part of the ScottishPower group, a Principal Partner for the United Nations climate change conference (COP26) to be held in Glasgow later this year. It is developing an energy model that will play a significant role in reaching the UK’s world-leading climate change targets and is investing a total of $13.93 B (£10 B) in the clean energy generation and networks infrastructure needed to help the UK decarbonise and reach net zero emissions.
