Algeria, Algiers: Algeria’s government is planning to issue the tender for 1 GW of photovoltaic (PV) solar capacity in June this year.

Algeria’s Ministry of Energy Transition & Renewable Energies is planning to issue the tender for 1 GW of PV solar capacity in June this year.

The Algerian government published a decree on 29 April giving authority to the ministry to manage and oversee the procurement process for the 1 GW programme. The launch of the upcoming tender in June was confirmed by Algeria’s Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies, Chems-Eddine Chitour, in the first week of May.

The 1 GW programme will be split into ten 100 MW PV projects, which will each be developed through the independent power producer model.

Another three tenders of the same size are expected to be issued each year between 2022 and 2024.

Algeria has set an ambitious target of installing 16 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2035. The North African country currently has 25 solar installations with a total capacity of 423 MW, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena).

A source has reported in May 2020 that the Algerian government had unveiled plans to develop 4 GW of photovoltaic solar capacity by 2024. The programme will require investment of between $3.2 B and $3.6 B.

According to the government, the programme will create 56,000 jobs during the construction phase and 2,000 long-term jobs for the operation and maintenance of the plants.

As part of its National Renewable Energy & Efficiency development plan, launched in 2015, Algeria has set a target for renewables to account for 27 % of the total installed power capacity by 2030, which will be about 22 GW. More than 13.5 GW of the total is expected to come from PV solar.
