EU: Virtual High Level Roundtable on Pact for Skills for the Renewable energy sector was held on 11 May.

The event was organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for internal market, industry, entrepreneurship and SMEs and hosted by Commissioners Virginijus Sinkevičius, Thierry Breton and Nicolas Schmit. The Roundtable was held following a launch of the Pact for Skills initiative at the European Vocational Skills Week on 10 November 2020.

The objective of the Pact for Skills is to mobilise all relevant stakeholders to reflect and decide on the measures to be undertaken in order to adequately educate people of working age in their industrial ecosystem.

The Renewable Energies Ecosystem has been identified as a priority ecosystem, in which a skills partnership under the Pact should be launched.

High Level Roundtable brought together industry leaders and representatives from 9 EU countries, as well as 10 European professional organisations and social partners, who discussed challenges the ecosystem faces in terms of upskilling and reskilling. KONČAR CEO Gordan Kolak, the only participant from Croatia, shared the experience and views of large companies. “From the perspective of a large company in power engineering industry, we should lead the development of new technologies and complex projects and solutions, and thus attract those employees that can support such processes by creating new added value”, said Kolak during the High Level Roundtable. He added: “Furthermore, large companies often collaborate with micro or small enterprises, important partners in some projects and suppliers of valuable products and services that are integrated into their complex solutions, providing large companies with a certain set of competencies.”

Mr. Kolak also addressed a century of KONČAR and expressed his belief that the company is resilient to create an environment stimulating employees to further enhance their skills. “Together with long-standing tradition, our advantage comes from continuous investment in people and RDI, which keeps the company up to date with technical and technological trends in the industry and makes it more resilient to future challenges. On the other hand, there is a great potential for collaboration with the academic community aimed at providing opportunities for professional development of expert staff and retaining them at KONČAR, while at the same time giving them additional reasons to stay in Croatia”, Kolak concluded.
