Queensland, Australia: TransGrid has reached a significant milestone for their Queensland-NSW Interconnector (QNI) upgrade with work more than 80 percent complete.

When the project is finished, it will help ensure reliable lower cost energy sharing between the states. The work is now moving from the civil to the electrical phase.

The key elements of the upgrade have already been implemented, including gantry construction at the Dumaresq and Tamworth substations, as well as the replacement and upgrade of towers. Also, 99 per cent of the transmission line upgrade to 120 degrees Celsius has been achieved, thus allowing higher power transfers while simultaneously maintaining statutory ground clearances for the higher temperatures.

New equipment in the QNI upgrade includes new capacitor banks, static VAR compensators (SVCs), SVC transformers and associated 330kV switch bays. Also, more than 280 people have been employed during the construction on the transmission lines and substations in Armidale, Tamworth and Dumaresq.
