USA, Pennsylvania, Columbia: PPL Electric Utilities moved a large transformer in Lancaster County on 19 August.

The equipment slowly made its way from the railyard in Columbia to the West Hempfield substation on Stone House Lane.

The transformer moved at 3 mph to 6 mph. The load stood around 6 m tall and was approximately 3.6 m wide.

The equipment transforms electricity that comes from a generation plant into a lower voltage that can be transmitted to distribution stations.

PPL said investments like the new transformer are part of the company’s ongoing commitment to deliver safe, reliable and affordable electricity.

PPL Electric Utilities provides electricity distribution and transmission services to about 1.4 million customers in central and eastern Pennsylvania. The company maintains more than 77,000 km (48,000 mi) of power lines and is an industry leader in using automated power restoration technology to strengthen reliability.
