Namibia, Dordabis: Works have commenced on the construction of Auas-Gerus transmission line project in Namibia.

The country’s power utility, NamPower has made the announcement stating the project is critical in ensuring that it keeps pace with the country’s increasing electricity needs.

The Auas-Gerus transmission line project is expected to cover over 800 km, and will form part of NamPower’s grid lines stretching across Namibia. NamPower intends to build a 400 kV transmission line from Kokerboom substation near Keetmanshoop to Auas substation near Dordabis.

Power Line Africa has won a $40.3 M tender to design and construct the project, with the expected completion date set for November 2022. The company will be using primarily the lightweight cross-rope suspension tower with the conductors in a compact delta configuration in the construction.

NamPower spokesman Tangeni Kambangula said the power line would help the company ensure a sustainable power supply and a lower tariff plan that will support economic growth and maintain the company’s financial sustainability.

“This line will allow the utility to serve more customers through access to its existing independent electricity producers and prospective solar, wind, biomass, and hydro among other generation plants, thereby enhancing accessibility to clean energy in the country,” said Kambangula.

“The tower to be used for the line uses less steel and blends into the surroundings with the aim to minimise environmental impact, as well as reduce pollution,” Kambangula explained.
