Tanzania: Installation of 27 transformers at the Julius Nyerere Hydro Electric Power Project (JHNPP) has started.
The transformers will increase transmission voltage of the electricity produced by turbines from 15 kV to 400 kV. This was revealed by Resident Engineer John Mageni from Tanroads Engineering Consultation Unit during a recent official tour of the project’s site.
Governance. Eng. Mageni mentioned other main ongoing work as construction of the power house. According to Mageni, foundation work for the construction of the switchyard where electricity produced at the JNHPP will be connected to the national grid has already begun.
Other ongoing work include construction of the main dam, construction of permanent bridge inside Rufiji River, and construction of three power water ways. The power water ways will channel water to hydro turbines.
He said that Chinese Company Dongfang Electric Corporation is proceeding with the making and installation of nine electromechanical units of equipment, which will have the capacity to produce 235 MW each.
“So far, construction work is going on well and the government has already paid Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electricity a total of $1.16 B (TZS 2,7 T) out of $2.8 B (TZS 6.5 T),” said Dr. Tito Mwinuka, managing director of Tanzania Electrical Supply Company (TANESCO).
Speaking at different times, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Services Management, Dr. Lauren Ndumbaro and Nsubili Joshua – Clerk of the Ministers Secretariat Council said the aim of the tour which involved staff of different levels from the two sections was to enable the staff to see in reality, the strategic projects that the government is implementing.
“The aim of this tour is to increase awareness to the civil servants, who have come here today on what their government is doing and motivate them, work even harder as a way of supporting their government and building their country,” they said.
