Saudi Arabia, Riyadh: Saudi Electricity Company has developed distribution transformers from 231/133 V to 400/230 V, for both primary voltage 33 and 13.8 kV.

Upon the Royal Decision to transfer from 231/133 V to 400/230 V, instead of scrapping the old voltage transformers, the company has redesigned and remanufactured them. After that, they were returned as new transformers with the new voltage. The transformers have passed all routine and temperature rise tests. The total savings have exceeded $3.2 B (SAR 12 B) over a period of 10 years, which was the duration of the project.

“We are grateful to all local transformers manufacturers: Saudi Transformers Company & WESCOSA, ABB Saudi Arabia, ALFANAR Electrical System’s ATC (Arabian transformers factory), UTEC, MATELEC Lebanon & Saudi, Al-Ojaimi transformers company, and Saudi FEDRAL transformers factory. We appreciate the cooperation with all of them through the various stages of development,” stated Jumaa A. Al-Halaby, Consultant Electrical Engineer at Saudi Electricity Company,  adding, “We are also grateful to the management and all employees at Saudi Electricity Company who have contributed to the project’s success.”

The research phase started in 2011 and the development in 2016. During the term of the project, around 400,000 transformers were redesigned.
