Laos: The Pala 500 kV transformer substation in Laos will go into operation by the end of this year, China Southern Power Grid (CSG) has announced.
A key part of the 500 kV high-voltage power transmission and distribution line network in 10 provinces in the northern and middle parts of Laos, the project is equipped with three main transformers with a total capacity of 750 MVA.
Once operational, it will contribute to the construction of a large-capacity and highly-efficient cross-border power transmission passage linking China, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. It will establish itself as a major “storage battery” for power in the southeast Asia region.
The substation is a key part of the 500 kV Xieng Khouang-Naxaythong power transmission and distribution project, which is part of the Laos 7th Five-Year Plan (2011-15) and the Belt and Road Initiative and valued at approximately $622 M.
