Netherlands: On Thursday 21 October, TenneT’s first transformer arrived for the transformer station in Wijk aan Zee.

The transformer is part of the connection between the offshore Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm and the national high-voltage grid.

On mainland, the work on the offshore network Hollandse Kust Noord and West Alpha is in full swing. The power from the wind turbines at sea will soon be brought ashore with 220 kV cables to TenneT’s new transformer station in Wijk aan Zee.

The first Siemens transformer for the new station in Wijk aan Zee has been built in Austria. This was transported by ship to IJmuiden and hoisted onto a trailer in the harbour before completing the last part of the route to the transformer station on land. This transport took place partly via the Tata Steel site to relieve the burden on the environment. The first transformer arrived in the port of IJmuiden on Wednesday morning 20 October and will be installed at the transformer station within a few weeks. The foundations and walls where the first transformer for the connection of the Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm will be installed are ready.

The second transformer is expected to be installed in November. This means that the transformers for the first Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm are ready. There will be six transformers in total. In addition, a total of two 220 kV compensating coils from Siemens will be installed by the end of October or in early November. The compensating coils compensate for the losses caused by the cable connections.

Finally, drilling and laying of the casing pipes for the construction of TenneT’s land cables has started. For the entire transformer substation, approximately 70 km of high-voltage cable will be laid between Wijk aan Zee and the high-voltage substation in Beverwijk.
