Croatia, Rijeka: A man teamed up with an acquaintance who owns a crane truck to steal a power transformer.

The perpetrators have damaged the transformer in the attempt, which has caused 1000 litres of cooling oil to leak out of the unit.

The police hold that the thieves may have caused a long-term pollution of the soil and harm to the human health.

A well-planned action has not ended so well for the two men. In short, the police suspect the 27-year-old citizen of the Republic of Serbia and his 49-year-old acquaintance from Croatia of stealing the transformer from a substation in Rijeka, Croatia, this year in August, as well as of environmental pollution.

The 27-yea-old is suspected of stealing the transformer, which was out of function, and persuading the owner of the crane truck to help him lift the transformer onto the truck and transport it off the substation.

The transformer was damaged during the attempt and the unit started leaking oil. After they drove off with the stolen unit, the truck owner parked the crane truck on a lawn in Saršoni in Rijeka, where the oil continued leaking.

The estimated damage inflicted to the Croatian national power company HEP (Hrvatska elektroprivreda) is $31,000 (HRK 200,000).

The vandals are now facing criminal charges.
