India, Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir’s Power Department has commissioned the first of its kind gas insulated substation (GIS) at Lassipora.

This has given a boost to power scenario in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The officials informed that in next three months, three more GIS will be commissioned to improve power supply in Kashmir.

“It is the latest generation of grid stations. The old one was AIS (air insulated) taking up a lot of space, structures, equipment and a very long gestation period. In case of GIS, space requirement is about one fifth of that for the old AIS, and the equipment is more like plug and play, which takes much less time for erecting. What is most important, it is least susceptible to faults. The possibility of power outages from grid side are thus minimal,” said Hashmat Qazi, Chief Engineer at JKPTCL.

While speaking about the positive impact that GIS Lassipora will have on power transmission to Pulwama district, Qazi said “When it comes to the transmission capacity of Pulwama, last year the district was mainly fed from 132/33 kV major grids namely Pampore, Awantipora and Lassipora which were all sourced through 220/132 kV grid substation Pampore only.”

“This year a big development has taken place as the JKPTCL was successful in commissioning of 160 MVA, 220/33 kV gas insulated substation, which is the first of its kind in Kashmir. The newly commissioned GIS substation was commissioned with the record figures of 85 MW as on date, thereby leaving unutilized capacity of 55 MW, which makes district Pulwama the first district in the valley with no allocation constraints from the grid.”
