USA, Iowa, Davenport: A substation regulator at the transforming station on Third Street here caught fire on 1 January, causing power to go out in the city.

Crews from Fire District No. 5 and Avista Utilities were dispatched around 8 a.m. and were on scene for about an hour and a half. A crew from Avista in Spokane is on its way to work on repairs, which is expected to take the rest of the day.

“We tried to put it out with a couple fire extinguishers, but it kept re-igniting,” District No. 5 chief Craig Sweet said.

He added the fire started ignited in the transformer due to an overloading issue.

Power went out in the city, Sweet said, with no estimated time for a reboot currently. An Avista spokesperson and Sweet said power in the city and down Highway 2 toward Mondovi would likely be out for the rest of the day. The outage affects 971 customers in city limits and 238 customers eastbound down the highway.
