The converter unit of the middle channel DC back-to-back project in the Greater Bay Area is the world’s first and second largest power plant, which was contracted by Tianwei Baobian (Qinhuangdao) Transformer Co., Ltd. (referred to as Qinbian Company). The first 500 kV water-cooled flexible direct transformer project in the middle channel DC back-to-back project in Guangzhou Dawan District, was successfully commissioned, laying a solid foundation for the overall project.

The flexible DC transformer is the core equipment of the high-voltage converter station. Compared with the ordinary AC transformer, in addition to the functions of voltage conversion and power transmission, it also has the functions of realizing the electrical isolation of the AC and DC systems and protecting the DC system. In December 2020, Baobian Electric won the bid for a total of 13 flexible DC transformers in the Zhongtong Project of Guangdong Power Grid Corporation, all of which were arranged to be manufactured in Qinbian Company.

The first flexible DC transformer was put into production on 26 February 2021, and passed the factory test on 23 June.
