Brazil: Spanish-based utility Iberdrola has commissioned a 730 km energy transmission line in Brazil, the largest power line across its operations globally.

The power line has been put into operation through Iberdrola’s Brazilian arm Neoenergia and runs between the north and northeast of Brazil across four states: Tocantins, Maranhão, Piauí and Bahía.

The aim of the project is to transport clean energy generated at the Belo Monte hydropower project, Brazil’s largest power plant, to improve the exchange of energy between the north and northeast.

Neoenergia has a stake in the hydropower project as the new line will improve the utility’s customer base and revenue accumulation.

Some 13,100 km of conductor cables have been used in the Jalapão energy transmission project, equivalent to the distance between São Paulo and Moscow.

The project has helped revitalise the economy through the creation of over 2,000 jobs at the peak of the works, according to the statement.

In addition to the project helping Brazil to achieve energy sustainability goals through the transportation of clean capacity, Neoenergia promoted environmental solutions during the construction phase by leveraging structures abandoned in situ for more than five years.
