Australia: Powerlink’s Ingham South Substation has received a transformer replacement which will bolster the energy supply in Far North Queensland.

The $6 M project saw crews dismantling a second ageing transformer to make way for a new 45-tonne transformer.

Measuring more than six metres long and 3.4 metres high, this was the second and final transformer to be replaced, and it is now fully operational.

Transformers are significant pieces of equipment in substations to ensure the power supply is secure and reliable.

Transformers convert high voltage electricity from the transmission network down to a lower voltage suitable for the distribution network.

The conversion of high to low voltage allows Ergon Energy to deliver electricity to households and businesses.

Powerlink’s transmission network plays an important role in powering the Queensland economy, helping deliver electricity to five million Queenslanders and 238,000 businesses.
