Philippines: Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. and S. L. Development Construction Corporation have secured a submarine power transmission project in the Philippines.

The project cost total is estimated at $35.7 M (¥4.3 B).

The project was awarded by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), who in charge of operating, maintaining and developing the country’s state-owned power grid.

The transmission project will connect the Cebu Substation and Lapulapu Substation in Visayas. Delivery and completion of the cable system are scheduled for 2023.

Furukawa Electric will supply the 230 kV AC XLPE-insulated 1600 mm2 triple-core submarine cable, which is regarded as the world-largest conductor size class submarine cable. It will be supplied alongside a cable temperature and load monitoring system.

The new submarine power transmission will reinforce power transmission capacity and maintain the continuous transmission of power towards the major load centres in Mandaue and Mactan. This will be done even during an N-1 contingency condition.

N-1 refers to grids capable of avoiding loss in electricity supply despite the potential of an outage on a single transmission line, cable, transformer or generator.

The new project comes in line with Furukawa’s push to contribute towards the sustainable development goals (SGDs) established by the UN.

The supplying and laying of submarine and underground cables are hoped to build interconnections between renewable energy sources. This namely includes sources such as offshore wind power generation and power grids.

In laying such cables, Furukawa has stated that they are taking care to minimize the impact on the ocean environment.
