Transformer oil - Application aspects by Dr. C. S. Narasimhan

We are delighted to announce that our new book titled Transformer Oil – Application aspects, authored by Dr. C. S. Narasimhan is now published and available in digital format.

This 500+-page book is based on over four decades of the author’s experience and it was reviewed by 12 renowned experts from the field. The book covers major topics specific to the industry:

  • Condition monitoring of oil in service
  • Oil ageing and its impact on transformers
  • Preventive and corrective actions related to oil ageing such as reconditioning and reclamation
  • Copper corrosion and its mitigation
  • Dynamic moisture equilibrium and online monitoring systems to prevent transformer failures
  • Use and abuse of chemical markers for insulation paper degradation such as furan and methanol
  • DGA and stray gassing interpretation methodologies
  • Ester fluids and their comparison with mineral oils in chemical and dielectric behaviour and transformer design implications
  • Nanofluids.

The content is relevant to oil manufacturers, transformer manufacturers, and utility chemists and engineers who manage the assets, and it will be particularly useful to students and newcomers in this field.

From the author:

“My main purpose of writing this book was to fill the void in today’s technical book market, as there is no single reference book that gives the current status of each topic related to applications. Topics are discussed based on IEC standards, reported field experiences, Cigre reports, discussions with peers and experts in each field and a whole lot of published papers. I earnestly hope that the book will serve as a means of educating new engineers and chemists, both in industry and in academic institutions.”

From a major oil manufacturer:

“A compilation, analysis and discussion of application aspects of insulating oils would require an in-depth knowledge of both chemistry and electrical engineering, which explains why very few books have been written on this subject. Over a couple of decades of working on the design, manufacture and performance monitoring of insulating oils, Dr. Narasimhan, who is a chemist by training, has gained a profound understanding of both the chemical and electrical attributes that impact insulating oils. He has very successfully navigated this complex subject and in a very accomplished manner, summarised the entire gamut of insulating oils from the selection of oils to their properties and their application aspects.

More importantly, the book is written in a simple language that should be easy for practitioners in the power industry to comprehend, although it does contain a few complex chemical structures and technical diagrams which are necessary for the subject matter.

Certainly, this book will prove invaluable to all technicians, engineers and managers at power utilities as well as those involved in the design, manufacture and maintenance of transformers and allied oil-filled equipment and, of course, to students and academicians working in this field as well.”
