Garden Route gets €10.5 M for renewable energy

South Africa, Garden Route: Garden Route District Municipality will receive $10,98 M (€10.5 M) for renewable energy projects.
The Swiss Development Agency and the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development have raised the amount, which was announced at the recent virtual Garden Route Skills Mecca (GRSM) Forum which focused on renewable energy projects and strategies for the Garden Route.
This follows an engagement that Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) had with the Energy & Water Sector Education Training Authority (EWSETA). EWSETA has since expressed its desire to support renewable energy projects in the Garden Route.
During the forum, Kirsten Freimann, who is the Head of Project for Career Path Development for Employment (CPD4E), from GIZ, spoke about the new 3-year programme that started in June 2022.
“The programme aims to address two major concerns identified by GIZ, which are the economic recession and the high youth unemployment rate plaguing South Africa,” says Freimann.
Freimann elaborated on the financial aspect of the project, saying, “with the help of the Swiss Development Agency, The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development Government was able to raise €10.5 million for the project.”
During the forum, the GRSM Forum chairperson, Alderman Stephen De Vries remarked that renewable energy is gaining momentum as countries around the world are increasingly understanding the benefits it offers.
