Extreme weather events pose an increasing risk to the stability of the US power grid. US power outages from severe weather have doubled in 20 years from about 50 annually nationwide in the early 2000s to more than 100 annually on average over the past five years. The frequency and length of power failures are at their highest level since reliability tracking began in 2013.

By 2050, investor-owned utilities in the U.S. will need to devote more than $500 billion to resilience initiatives.
