China, Beijing: China has fully operationalized a major domestic power transmission project that sends electricity from resource-rich western regions to energy-consuming areas in the east.

The construction of the 800-kV UHV DC power transmission project between Baihetan and Zhejiang was completed on Friday and has already begun operating, according to the State Grid Corporation of China.

The clean electricity generated at Baihetan hydropower station, China’s second-largest hydropower station, will be sent from Sichuan Province in the southwest to Zhejiang Province in the east through a transmission line that stretches 2,121km.

Another project that transmits power from Baihetan to Jiangsu Province in the east was put into use in July 2022. The two UHV projects are expected to deliver approximately 60 billion kWh of clean electricity annually, saving 27 MT of coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 49 MT, according to Huang Yong of the UHV department of the State Grid. These projects will also help eastern regions meet increased power demand during the winter and support economic development and the well-being of residents, Huang said. Located on the Jinsha River, a section of the Yangtze River in southwestern China, Baihetan has a total installed capacity of 16 GW, making it the second largest hydropower station in the country after the Three Gorges Dam project.
