Germany: Iberdrola has announced the completion of the offshore substation topside (OSS) installation at its 476 MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm.

The installation carried out on the wind farm located in the German waters of the Baltic Sea was executed by the Dutch company Heerema Marine Contractors using the Thialf installation vessel.

The collaboration on the construction, installation, and commissioning of the OSS for the German offshore wind farm was initiated with an agreement signed between Iberdrola and transmission system operator 50Hertz in May 2021.

The function of the OSS is to collect the clean energy produced by the wind turbines and convert the supply voltage before feeding it into the onshore power grid at the Lubmin grid interconnection point. The estimated export of the produced electricity is 1.9 TWh per year.

“The offshore substation is a key piece of technology for supplying sustainable energy to hundreds of thousands of households and for the decarbonisation of German industry. We are very pleased to have achieved this central milestone in close cooperation with 50Hertz as planned,” said Iris Stempfle, offshore division managing director and deputy CEO of Iberdrola Deutschland.

One connected to the grid, the substation will transform the clean energy from 66 kV to 220 kV and transmit through two high voltage subsea cables across a distance of 90 km to the Lubmin landing point into the 50Hertz transmission grid.
