South Africa, Johannesburg:  South Africa’s power utility Eskom has announced the appointment of Calib Cassim as Interim Group CEO, with immediate effect.

The appointment follows the abrupt departure of André de Ruyter, who was initially set to leave Eskom by the end of March. However, Eskom on 21 February announced that de Ruyter is to immediately leave the company.

Eskom stated that Cassim will lead the utility’s management team until further notice, as they attempt to manage the loadshedding issues and stabilise the electricity supply in South Africa.

Calib Cassim has worked in Eskom for over 20 years, and his most recent post was that of Eskom’s Chief Financial Officer. He is a registered chartered accountant with a master’s degree in business leadership.

De Ruyter has recently exposed crime and corruption at the power utility in an interview, revealing that he will be leaving South Africa following the disclosure.
