Australia, Sydney: Australian power transmission company Transgrid has launched a new technology for simplifying the process of recycling old transmission lines.

Transgrid has teamed up with German-manufactured ZECK to utilise ZECK AI/Steel Separator (ZAS) technology for recycling conductors in western Sydney.

The process involves the separation of the outer aluminium layer from the undamaged steel core, which is finally wound onto a cable drum for recycling. As a result, the company claims it can reduce up to 90 % of carbon emissions related to the recycling of conductors.

“For Transgrid we can get a much higher return on the conductor as compared to current processes, the environment wins with reduced emissions and local businesses benefit too as they get readily available and processed aluminium,” said the company’s field coordinator, Mitch Coppock. “By taking out that overseas shipping we also guarantee the quality of labour that is used to process it, making it a more transparent and ethical process.”
