UK, Bridgewater: National Grid has announced the successful energisation of the world’s first T-pylons in Somerset, UK.

The new pylons were constructed as a part of the $1.1 B (£900 M) Hinkley Connection Project, a 57 km HV power transmission line between Bridgewater and Loxton in Somerset.

High-voltage electricity of up to 400 kV is now transmitted through the 36 new T-pylons, a new power substation at Sanford and 8.5 km underground cables. The company plans to commission additional 80 T-pylons by 2024.

“We are extremely proud to have reached this significant milestone on the Hinkley Connection Project. The T-pylons are now reinforcing and strengthening the network in the South West and are ready for the connection of low carbon energy when Hinkley Point C starts generating. This new design forms part of our significant investment in the network in England and Wales, adding capacity onto the grid to deliver low-carbon electricity to millions of people across the UK to use for years to come, and helping the UK’s journey towards net zero,” commented Steven Haskayne, Project Director for National Grid.
