Ghana, Accra: Transformer overload has caused localised power cuts in different parts of the country, said the managing director of Electricity Company of Ghana.

The root cause, he claims, is that the number of people per transformer has increased beyond capacity of units. For example, the initial population in the area of the installed transformer used to be 50 households, only to reach 200 households to be connected to the unit in just one year.

He also stated that the use of two or more air conditioners per house has also added to the problem, emphasising the air conditioners have, of course, become a necessity due to the weather conditions.

The ideal situation would be for the customers to notify the company of any changes or increase of electrical appliances in their homes.

Another challenge contributing to the overloading of transformers is illegal connection. Pursuant to the law, ECG does not have the mandate to go behind the customer’s meter, but can do so if it has reasonable cause that there has been power theft.
