Japan, Tokyo: Japan is working on a plan to improve the strength of its power grid through extensive expansion of renewables.

The venture would amount to a total investment of approximately $50 B by 2050. Working to build a carbon-free society, Japan will attempt to reach this goal by using solar, wind and other renewable energy sources as major components. In addition, the country will need to develop a cross-regional power transmission system, which will be crucial to the effective utilisation of renewables.

The plan envisions that renewable energy will take up to 50 % of the country’s total energy mix by 2050. A new transmission network connecting Tokyo and the northern regions of Tohoku and Hokkaido, Japan’s main regions in terms of solar and wind energy production, is fundamental to this large project.

Japan’s ministry of economy and industry will start consultations with utilities and other relevant companies and organisations to come up with a definite plan of action and determine how the costs of this project will be covered.
