Uganda, Kampala: Eskom Uganda Ltd has returned hydropower plants to UEGCL after the expiry of a 20-year-long concession.

State-owned Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) got back the power generation assets on 1 April, following the end of the concession period.

The concession included the Kiira (200 MW) and Nalubaale (180 MW) hydroelectric power plants, located at a distance of 2 km from each other, where the White Nile flows out of Lake Victoria.

Eskom stated its intentions to improve the power generation in South Africa as a factor that has contributed to the company’s decision not to extend the concession agreement. Since UEGCL envisaged direct management of the plants as part of its growth strategy, Eskom will receive $12 M as part of its exit package.
