Lybia, Tripoli: The president of Libyan General Electricity Company (GECOL) Mohamed al Mashal has signed a contract for the construction of a new power plant.

The new plant’s production capacity will be over 1,000 MW and is estimated to cover the increasing power supply demand.

The contracted companies that will build the plant in the country’s western region, in the city of Zliten, are Siemens, UCC Holding Qatar and A-Suwaidi Electric Egypt.

According to GECOL the total energy generation in the country is expected to reach 8,700 MW before the summer peak, which is to cover the current consumption ranges between 5,000 and 6,000 MW.

The company said that the reason for generating a surplus of over 2,000 MW is a large number of major overhauls that were completed before entering the previous winter peak.

The new gas-fired power plant will, therefore, play a key role in meeting the growing demand for electricity in the country.
