Zambia, Lusaka: Zambia has commissioned a Chinese-constructed hydropower plant as a renewable energy source that will help the country reduce load-shedding.

The Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station was officially commissioned by the country’s president Hakainte Hichilema, following the powering up of the last of five generators.

Constructed by the Chinese hydropower engineering and construction company Sinohydro Corporation Limited, the project has added a total of 750 MW to the country’s national grid.

The power plant, located 90 km south of the Zambian capital Lusaka, was funded by the Export-Import Bank of China. The construction commenced in 2015, and in February this year, Zambia announced that it was also to build a solar plant to increase its electricity generation during the ongoing power cuts.

The plant is a project of the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC), a publicly listed company that supplies electricity to the country’s mining industry.
