Kenya, Nairobi: Kenya’s Ministry of Energy has confirmed that a major substation that will serve Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia, is to be commissioned later this year.

The substation will connect Nairobi through Isinya to Embakasi and Nairobi North to Mombasa through Isinya to Rabai.

The project is to become a connection point to Ethiopia through a 500 kV transmission line and Tanzania through the Isinya-Arusha line.

This reportedly the largest substation in East Africa is aimed at stabilising power, increasing transmission capacity, and improving the quality and reliability of power supply in these countries.

The substation receives and evacuates green geothermal power from Olkaria, wind power from Lake Turkana and the power imported via the 500 kV Ethiopia-Kenya HVDC link.

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) signed a $230 M contract with Siemens AG–Isolux Ingineiria Consortium for the construction of the substation in 2015.
