USA, Washington, D.C.: The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a $38 M funding opportunity for National Laboratories to advance key research and development.

Funding from the Grid Modernization Initiative (GMI) lab will be utilized to develop and support technologies for better integration of electricity sources and energy storage and resolve related concerns. Modernisation of the grid is essential to achieving President Biden’s goals of 100 % clean electricity by 2035 and a fully decarbonized economy by 2050.

GMI expects to make awards in the following five topic areas: power and controls electronics; cybersecurity for architectures, standards and practices; quantum facilities for computing, sensing and security; and climate impact on energy resources. All submitted proposals must include at least two National Laboratories and submissions are encouraged to include substantive participation from external stakeholders, such as the industry, academia and non-governmental organisations.
