USA, San Francisco: Parts of San Francisco were left without power after an outage knocked out power to nearly 10,000 customers.

Pacific Gas and Electric said in a statement the outage resulted from an underground transformer fire, which then burned up electrical wiring and underground circuits, knocking out power in the evening hours.

The power was soon restored to some customers, but the majority were still without electricity the next day.

San Francisco’s Emergency Operations Center has been activated to determine the extent of the outage and is working with PG&E.

The residents saw the smoke and flames as the incident happened.

“It was a popping explosion and then the purple flames started to come out,” said one of the neighbours.

The outages are in the Financial District, Marina, Russian Hill and parts of Chinatown.

The PG&E outage map, as of the evening of 27 April says some of these locations would not have power restored until late in the evening of 28 April.
