Tanzania, Dodoma: African Development Bank (AfDB) aims at improving hydropower capacity across the African continent, making it a key part of its energy policy.

The bank is providing $161 M in funding for 87.8-MW Kakono Hydropower Plant, a $300 M-worth project agreed in March between the Government of Tanzania, the AfDB, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the European Union (EU).

The hydropower plant project is to be developed and carried out by Tanzania’s Electric Supply Company (TANESCO).

A portion of the funds will be utilised for financing the upgrading of the existing Kyaka substation and the construction of a new 220 kV transmission line, in length of 39 km.

Another project funded by AfDB, the Singrobo-Ahouaty hydropower plant in Côte d’Ivoire, has reached a 78 % completion stage. This plant is the first private sector-funded hydropower plant in West Africa, financed by a mix of debt and equity, and AfDB Group is co-financing the $192.2-M project with $44.11 M.

“At the end of this stage, we will have the commissioning process, the start-up tests, and ultimately power generation,” Christophe Blairon, CEO of IHE, the Ivorian investment company and project implementing partner, said in March during a visit by the local state authority.

When completed, the plant will supply approximately 10,000 households with clean energy.
