China, Sichuan: China is building an ultra-high voltage substation at the highest altitude in the country so far.

The construction of a 1,000 kV substation in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of southwest China’s Sichuan Province commenced a couple of days ago.

The substation has a capacity of six million kVA, raising the record for the highest-altitude substations in China from 1,500 to 3,450 metres.

Upon completion of the project, the main power grid in southwest China will be able to increase its voltage level from 500 kV to 1,000 kV, thus delivering 12 billion kWh of clean renewable electricity to its customers on a yearly basis.
