Japan, Tokyo: Hitachi’s new structure for Japan’s power grids business with the intention of early achievement of a carbon-neutral society and resiliency of Japan’s electricity network

Global technology leader, Hitachi Ltd., announced that the company will transition its Japanese power grids business to a new structure with Hitachi Energy. In doing so, it will make use of Hitachi Energy’s globally leading technologies and Hitachi’s digital technologies, including Lumada, to provide support for the early adoption of a carbon-neutral society and better resiliency of Japan’s electricity network.

Hitachi will capitalize on its expertise in Japanese market, as well as prominent technologies and solutions based on Hitachi Energy’s global market knowledge and experience, to contribute to Japan’s green transformation (GX). This will enable the company to provide new values, such as improving the asset life cycle with the maintenance and services of the existing electricity network, and supporting power grid flexibility, stability and security.

The businesses and solutions covered by this transition are mostly GIS (gas insulated switchgear), transformers and HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) businesses for utility companies and their maintenance businesses.

The company aims to achieve the following transition target periods: HVDC business from the second half of fiscal year (FY) 2023; service business from FY 2024; and the equipment business, including GIS and transformers, by the end of FY 2024.

Products such as GIS and transformers will transition to those produced at Hitachi Energy’s manufacturing sites, and the manufacturing base in Hitachi City will become an important base function providing advanced engineering and services from FY 2025.

The company also plans to provide support for the strengthening of power grids and the development of a nation-wide next-generation electricity network by utilizing Lumada and other technologies, such as EconiQ (a carbon neutrality product, service and solution), as well as its global experience, know-how, technology and human resources.
