Hitachi ABB Power Grids wins Indian Railways transformer deal

India, New Delhi: Hitachi ABB Power Grids India secured USD 4.6 M order for Indian railway electrification.

Hitachi ABB Power Grids India has declared that it secured an order worth USD 4.6 M (Rs1.2 B) to assist the Indian government in achieving its objective of 100 % railway electrification and reducing its carbon footprint.

According to the announcement, the company will supply transformers to Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), the government’s electric locomotive manufacturer, for the production of 400 passenger and freight locomotive engines. For CLW’s goods locomotive engines, 6,531 kVA transformers will be provided, while 7,775 kVA transformers will be supplied for its passenger engines.

Indian Railways is the largest consumer of electricity in the country, accounting for approximately 2 % of the national energy consumption. The railway aims to become a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030.

N Venu, the Managing Director of Hitachi ABB Power Grids India, stated that railways play a vital role in environmentally sustainable transportation, and their pioneering technology will contribute to achieving a balance between energy expansion and emission reduction.
